FLL Alumna Helps Promote Linguistic Diversity at NC State

FLL alumna Stephany Dunstan

CHASS recently profiled Foreign Languages and Literatures alumna Stephany Dunstan’s efforts to promote linguistic diversity within the NC State community. Dunstan, who earned her B.A. in Spanish in 2008, currently serves as NC State’s assistant director in the Office of Assessment, where she continues her research on the impact of linguistic diversity on the college experience.

Dunstan recently completed her Ph.D. dissertation at NC State, for which she received one of the prestigious Dissertation of the Year awards from the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE).

Greg Dawes Named to Distinguished Professor Rank

Dr. Greg Dawes, professor of Latin American Studies and faculty member of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, has recently been appointed to the ranks of distinguished professors.

Dawes is a scholar of Latin American literature and culture and past recipient of the CHASS Alumni Distinguished Research Award (2010). He attended the University of Northern Iowa (BA and MA) and completed his PhD at the University of Washington (1990).

As a child, he spent his formative years in Córdova, Argentina, where his parents were working as missionaries. He and his wife Marcia have two daughters, Amanda and Giuliana.

The author of several books on Latin American poets such as Pablo Neruda, Mario Benedetti, Vicente Huidobro, among others, Greg Dawes has been visiting professor at the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill and at the Universidad de Chile. In 2003, he co-founded A Contracorriente, a refereed journal on Latin American studies, and has served as its editor ever since. He is also founder and managing editor of Editorial A Contracorriente, a press associated to the journal.

Army Accords Dwight Stephens Commander’s Award for Public Service

Dr. Dwight Stephens, Director of the Integrated Learning Research Initiative

Special Forces Colonel Donald D. Franklin awarded FLL Dwight Stephens the US Department of Army Commander’s Award for Public Service in a ceremony at Ft. Bragg last May 20. According to the Army’s Institute of Heraldry, the Commander’s Award for Public Service is the fourth highest honor the United States Department of the Army can bestow upon a civilian. The award consists of a bronze medal, lapel button and certificate.

Dr. Stephens currently serves as Director of the Integrated Learning Research Initiative at NC State University as well as Program Director of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures’ Critical Language Institute.
